Excellent Quote from PP, or Why I don’t do Facebook or MySpace

Phil’s Proof » Everything that’s wrong with Facebook:

Suddenly, when all your friends have been reduced to teensy avatars, canned quotations, and endless ‘favourites’ lists, they don’t seem quite as special as you may have once remembered them.

I really liked this quote from a blog post on the problems with the big social networking sites.   Don’t get me wrong, social networking sites that are targets can be great.  I really enjoy the discussions on BlogCatalog and I use LinkedIn to keep in contact with people in my professional life.  I just find places like Facebook and MySpace a bit creepy.

I’d recommend that people go and read the original post on Phil’s Proof to get the full context of that quote.  I just came across that blog by accident and I really like the writing style and sense of humor that Phil displays there.

My oldest child uses FaceBook. My other two younger ones are all over MySpace. I don’t even come close to having the time they do to spend on those sites. I like BlogCatalog also. When I first signed up I did not think it would be too interesting, but some of the discussions are quite good.

I’d like to find someplace like BlogCatalog with more people who blog because they enjoy it. Many discussions feel like they are so driven by people trying to make money that I don’t enjoy them. I don’t really think there is anything wrong with it, but the constant begging for comments and links seems very incestuous to me.

Maybe I am just old fashioned. I would prefer to take the time it requires to handle a presence on those sites and spend that time actually being with my friends.

Yeah, that is a good point JD. Maybe I’ll rethink the thought! These days with homeschooling my youngest still and all the other activities, chores, etc., it seems like I am stretched so thin. Tonight, right now, though, I am about to turn everything off, make some stuffed peppers (from my garden), and just spend the evening eating and watching a movie! Once in a great while you just have to be lazy!

    on edit: It works great!

I love stuffed peppers! A few weeks ago we had dinner guests who are trying to avoid carbs so I made sloppy joes and then took bell peppers, filled the bottoms of the peppers with shredded Monterey jack cheese and then filled them the rest of the way with the sloppy joe mixture and baked them. They were excellent.

Sidenote: We get all our ground beef from a farmer in Bucks County Pennsylvania and its all natural grass fed beef. As a result the meat is REALLY lean and is only suitable for things like pasta sauce, sloppy joes, or tacos since its too lean for burgers.

Now I’m drooling!!! I really am going to turn this thing off now and get busy.
