If deceiving Congress and the American people was not reason enough, maybe heading a department that has lost THIRTY MILLION DOLLARS worth of equipment will convince Condaleezza Rice that she should step down.
It has surfaced that the US State Department can’t account for up to about 1,000 laptops, perhaps as many as 400 of which belonged to the department’s Anti-Terrorism Assistance Program.
The State Department’s Inspector General has been conducting an equipment audit for three months. Only the first stage, an inventory, has been completed.
Internal auditors found that the department lost track of US$30 million worth of computer equipment, “the vast majority of which… perhaps as much as 99 percent,” were laptops, according to one official.
Forget the National Security implications here and just think what the loss of thirty million dollars of government money really means.
To put that in perspective, $30,000,000 is enough money to provide vaccinations granting immunity to polio to 22,200,000 children (do the math at Polio epidemic threatens Africa). That money could also pay for 500,000 gifts of a “Flock of Hope” from Heifer International. That would provide half a million families – not individuals but whole families – with a source of both food and income for years to come.
But we are after all taking about the US Government so lets put it in terms they can understand. At corn’s current high price of about $6.00 a bushel we could buy 5,000,000 bushels for $30,000,000 and that could be used to produce 14,000,000 gallons of Ethanol.
Bush was elected as “the CEO” president? If this kind of inventory control goes on under a US President with an MBA, I’d hate to see what would happen if we elected a constitutional law scholar or something.

Fortunately, she will go at the end of the year. It is probably futile to spend much effort on this sort of thing in the mean time.
