Stop Eating Tuna

naked capitalism: Stop Eating Tuna:

I saw this story yesterday on the BBC, which reports on the danger of collapse of bluefin tuna stocks, and didn’t cover it then because I thought it was the sort of thing that would get plenty of media attention. The fact that the not-terribly-environmentally-minded US is supporting a 3-5 year ban on tuna fishing in the North Atlantic says the situation is serious.

I am stunned to see today that when I put "tuna" into Google News, I got all of 5 articles on this issue (BBC, a New York Times editorial, Fish Update, the Telegraph, and the Edmunton Sun).

Readers may note that I have never advocated any particular pro-environment course of action, so I hope you will take this request seriously.

It has been news for a while,. but I think the point Yves was making was the MAJOR change in importance as reflected by the US Government getting behind a 3-5 year ban on Bluefin fishing.

The US has always been very slow to come to the table over fisheries issues. If you can get your hands on it, read “Cod: A Biography of the Fish That Changed the World by Mark Kurlansky”. It covers the history of the North Atlantic Cod fisheries from the pre-Columbian Baque’s to the present collapse of the breeding stock.

The US taking action now should be a huge wake up call that this has gotten very serious.

That site is right about the lack of coverage. The story is one that has been around for a while, so maybe it is not viewed as “new enough” news to cover extensively.

If you eat tuna, make it Albacore Tuna. Just watch out for the mercury! :-0
