People trust technology too much these days.

I got up at 6:30 this morning so I could be at the conference office by 7:15.  the morning workshops start at 9:00am so Bill and I figured that would give us plenty of time to set up the rooms with projectors and laptops.  I was a bit early, as I usually am, and I walked into the office at 7:00am.  One of the show registration desk folks saw me and did a double take and then asked why I was there so early.    I looked at my phone and pointed out that it was 7:00am.  They told me no, It’s only 6:00am.

I booted up my laptop and sync’d my time and saw it was indeed 7:00am.  I finally tracked down the source of the confusion.  The registration desk PC’s are rentals, all running Windows 98 (it’s a NETBEUI thing, dont ask).  Because the rental company doesn’t get many requests for Windows 98, they don’t have images set up.  They do a clean install each time.

Well,  Windows 98 does not know about the change in dates for the recent Daylight Savings Time modifications.  Under the old system, this morning would have been the day to "fall back".  It just amused me that people wouldn’t trust their cell phones which are constantly in contact with a system that handles the time display.  Instead they trusted a nearly 10 year old operating system that should have been obliterated from the face of the earth years ago.
