 Urge President Bush to Increase Tsunami Aid

The death toll from the earthquake and subsequent tsunami in Asia has risen to over 75,000, the devastation is enormous, and concerns about the disaster becoming an even larger humanitarian crisis due to potential illness outbreaks of malaria and cholera are growing.

Just today, December 28, the United States announced it has more than doubled its preliminary pledge of aid from $15 million to $35 million. However, preliminary estimates of the need are far greater, and Secretary of State Colin Powell and UN representatives have already stated that billions may be needed in what could be the costliest disaster in human history.

Increasing the United States’ pledge of support to $35 million is a good start, but the need will be far, far greater. As one of the world’s wealthiest and most prosperous nations, the United States should step up to that leadership role by increasing its financial aid pledge significantly and by urging all nations to donate as much as they can in terms of funds, food and other aid support.
