As opposed as I am to many genetically modified foods and crops and predatory seedforms this is genetic research at work in a way I can appreciate. I know much of what the plant does could be done via technology but think about how usefull this would have been for the people in low-tech rural Vietnam for the last 30 years or Afghanistan since the USSR withdrew. Simply recognizing a color of flower (and hopefully notifying someone who can remove the mine) would allow people to live in areas that have been horribly dangerous for residents who have grown up knowing that sendign the kids out to play or plowing a new field to plant could be a deadly activity.
