We got a house – Part 3.

Just heard from the realtor. They accepted the offer on the place we liked on Devereaux (not sure that’s the right spelling). We will settle on it on Jan 15th.

Bird has had it described in painful detail :) but for the rest of you:

This place is in the Wissanoming section of Philadelphia.

It is a two story brick twin – a straight through design. The house was built in 1910 and has been lived in by one family since it was built. Hilda, the 80 year old woman selling it, was born IN the house. The house is a lot different than others we looked at. Much of that is because Hilda’s uncle was a master carpenter and did a lot of work around the house. There is a lot of gorgeous wood work.

The living room – right in the front door has a huge arch shaped built in bookcase to the right of the chimney. There is crown molding throughout the house.

Walkthrough: You walk in the front door into a large licing room/parlor type space. The bookshelves are on the right and straight ahead of you is the foot of the front stairs. Walking forward to the left of the steps you pass through a doorway that takes you into the formal dining room. In one corner of the dining room is a built in corner unit that her uncle salvaged from a mansion in Society Hill that caught fire years ago.

On the other side of the dining room there is a doorway into short hallway. To your right is the door to the basement. Straight ahead is the kitchen. The kitchen is very old fashioned with only one built in cabinet above the sink. The sink itself is an antique double basin sink with the large drain boards on both sides. To the right and back in the kitchen is a door onto an addition on the back with a powder room and storage space.

Out the back door from the addition is a tiny back yard with a nice herb garden around the borders.

On the same wall that you enter the dining room from – to the right in the kitchen – is the foot of the back stairs to the second floor.

Up the back stairs you arive in the hallway. To your right is one of the two bigger bedrooms – this one faces the back of the house and had a big bay window with the radiators under the windows. To the left down the hall is the third – smaller bedroom. Just past that is the bathroom with an original clawfoot tub and perfectly maintained tilework of white and moss green.

Past the bathroom is the front bedroom – it’s the same size as the back one – it also has a bay window with radiators under them. This bedroom has two closets and overlooks the front yard and the street.

The basement has 8 or 9 foot ceilings and will be having a new floor put in (including the old coal room in the front under the porch) on December 6th. Since the basement has high ceilings and will have anew flooor and is dry we are going to finish the basement and use it as our computer room.

I think that’s about it. We won’t have pictures until we move in.

Oh yea – the landing on the front stairs has a stained glass window that is visible from the living room.
